THE YEAR SO FAR:

🎣 2025 Fishing Season Kickoff: A Wild Start from February to April

As seasoned anglers know, fishing seasons in the Riviera Maya don’t follow a strict script. Each year unfolds in its own unpredictable rhythm—and 2025 is proving that point more than ever.

At Wasabi Loco Sportfishing, based in Puerto Aventuras Marina, we traditionally view February as the unofficial kickoff to the fishing season. That’s

Tranquility

when the baitfish—especially the airborne squadrons of flying fish—start arriving in noticeable numbers, setting the stage for the bigger gamefish to move in. Once the bait arrives, Sailfish, Mahi-Mahi, and even early Wahoo are never far behind.

But as every local captain knows: no two seasons are ever the same.

🗓️ A Strong Start with a Rough Twist

This year, February 2025 brought some real promise. Early signs were strong. We had decent water temperatures, baitfish were moving in like clockwork, and some of the first Sailfish of the year were being caught just offshore. Mahi were also popping up on the edges of weed lines, making for some exciting action for those early-season charters.

We thought we were off to the races—but Mother Nature had other plans.

Two extended periods of rough weather in March derailed what could have been one of the strongest starts in recent memory. While it's not uncommon for the port to close for a few days at a time due to wind and swells, what we saw this year was on another level.

“In 18 years, I’ve never seen conditions like this,” one captain said. “We had one week-long closure early on, and then a brutal two-week stretch where the port was completely shut down. It was like the ocean just slammed the brakes on us.”

💸 Refunds and Lost Days

Unfortunately, that weather hit right when the bite was heating up. With boats stuck at the dock, we had no choice but to refund more deposits than at any time since the COVID shutdowns. It was a frustrating period—not just for us, but for our guests who were eager to fish and had planned their trips around what is normally prime season.

Luckily, the days we did manage to get out on the water made up for the ones we lost.

🐟 When the Seas Cooperated… The Fish Delivered

On calm days, the fishing was consistently solid. Our clients enjoyed action-packed outings with Sailfish, Mahi-Mahi, and even some early Marlin sightings, which are rare this early in the year.

We saw a nice uptick in Wahoo activity on the deeper edges and structure around 300 feet, especially right before the weather fronts. Bottom fishing held up too, with Snapper and Amberjack bending rods when trolling conditions were tough.

This is one of the reasons we love fishing this area: even when the pelagics are finicky, there’s always a backup plan.

🏆 Puerto Aventuras Fishing Tournament 2025 Recap

One of the first major tournaments of the year—the Puerto Aventuras Fishing Tournament—also took place in April, and it gave us a clear picture of the fishery’s potential.

Unlike some previous years when the action was so slow that the tournament was won by a big Barracuda, 2025 turned up the heat. This year’s competitors landed a range of headline species:

  • Blue Marlin

  • White Marlin

  • Sailfish

  • Mahi-Mahi

  • Wahoo

With this kind of spread, it’s clear that April 2025 delivered the kind of offshore excitement we all hope for during the spring transition.

🎯 Looking Ahead to May and June

Based on what we’ve seen so far, the classic peak season—May and June—has all the ingredients to be phenomenal… assuming the weather plays nice. Water temps are lining up, bait is present, and if this wind pattern finally settles, we expect an explosion of big-game action in the coming weeks.

If you’re planning a trip, now is the time to book. These next two months are often our busiest and most productive.

🧭 Final Thoughts from the Dock

Fishing in the Riviera Maya is always a dance between predictable cycles and unpredictable conditions. We know what’s supposed to happen—and sometimes nature plays along. Sometimes it doesn’t. This season has already reminded us of the highs and lows that come with chasing fish on the open sea.

But here’s the truth: when it’s good here, it’s world-class. And even in the tougher moments, our captains and crew are doing what we always do—adjust, adapt, and keep our clients safe, smiling, and (whenever possible) reeling them in.
